Humberto Soto vs. David Diaz could replace Margarito-Jones on Pacquiao-Clottey undercard

By Eric Thomas: Michael Marley of Examiner.com is reporting that former World Boxing Council lightweight champion David Diaz (35-2-1, 17 KO’s) could be facing super featherweight Humberto Soto (50-7-2, 32 KO’s) on the undercard of the WBO welterweight title fight between champion Manny Pacquiao and challenger Joshua Clottey at the Dallas Cowboy stadium, in Arlington, Texas. The possible Soto-Diaz fight would take the place of the welterweight bout between former WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito and Carson Jones.

Margarito lost his boxing license last year after the California Athletic Commission revoked it for a year due to Margarito being found with an illegal foreign substance inside his hand wraps before his bout against Shane Mosley in January 2008. The Texas Commission will be deciding on Thursday whether to give Margarito back his license. If they fail to do this, then Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is prepared to put the Diaz-Soto bout in as a replacement for the Margarito-Jones fight.

This is a win-win situation either way for boxing fans. The Diaz vs. Soto fight will likely be a much more interesting fight for fans given the exciting style of fighting that Soto and Diaz, both brawlers, bring to the ring with them. The only drawback is that Soto will likely be too good for Diaz and may end up pounding him into the canvas almost as quickly as Margarito will likely do against the over-matched Jones if their fight takes place on March 13th.

If Margarito doesn’t receive his license right away on Thursday, Arum will be looking to bring him back for a fight in Mexico on May 8th. Since the fight wouldn’t be taking place in the United States, it wouldn’t matter whether Margarito has his boxing license back or not.

There is talk of Margarito, if he can get his boxing license back, being a future opponent for Pacquiao in 2010 if the negotiations for a bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao go nowhere. Margarito would then be the backup plan to take Mayweather’s place for a fight at the Dallas Cowboy stadium.

Margarito, a very popular fighter among Mexican boxing fans, would likely be able to draw in a lot of Mexican fans to come to the Dallas Cowboy stadium to see the fight between him and Pacquiao.
As for the Diaz-Soto fight, this is an excellent replacement fight for the Margarito-Jones bout.

Other than the Pacquiao-Clottey fight, this could wind up being the most competitive bout on the card. There aren’t many interesting fights on the undercard with former lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo facing Alfonso Gomez and John Duddy vs. Michael Medina being the most notable fights on the card. Super bantamweight prospect Roberto Marroquin (12-0, 9 KO’s) is also fighting on the undercard.
